My experience through working with the 7th graders and interviewing them is that they love hands on, group work activities. This lesson plan calls for a worksheet that outlines the chapter. However, instead of individual work I had the students split up into groups so that they would be assigned a section in which the four of them would become 'masters' of that section. The students would then present to the class allowing all of the other students to fill in the notes. This activity has proven to be successful and the kids have good things to say about it because it breaks the textbook down into a simpler form. |

This lesson was for 7th graders in their South Asia unit. Usually when the students are taught vocabulary for a particular section, they are introduced to the terms through a PowerPoint and they fill out a key term worksheet which includes a definition in their own words and a picture. To switch things up a little and add a role play activity in the classroom, I chose to split the class up into small groups and give them each a vocabulary word. From there, they were to find a way to act the word out or put it in a song so that the class would remember and know what the term means. After individually interviewing students, I discovered that they liked this activity and they said that the acting helped them remember the meaning of the words when it came to the unit test.

I use exit slips to check student understanding following a lesson. I make sure to include them as a weekly routine in the classroom, so that I am able to get accurate feedback as we move through more content. Since I use exit slips frequently, these posters are hung on the back board and I constantly refer to them. The exit process? Students receive a sticky note or index card, students refer to these posters and write their "number" of understanding as well as a question or something they learned. After the 1-2 minutes they are given to complete this activity, they drop their note in the back bin on their way out the door. I collect all the notes and take time to reflect on their responses and compare the responses between the different class periods. I adjust my teaching based on how well students are understanding.

News Broadcast
Every day at the beginning of Civics class students watched CNN Student News. This news broadcast allowed for students to understand issues going on in the world and discussion following the 10 minute broadcast allowed us to apply these issues to their lives. Sometimes the broadcasts were Civics related and allowed students to use prior knowledge to understand major issues addressed in the broadcast.
